Buddy Platform Takes The Internet Of Things From Seattle To Down Under...Managing Global Flow Of Big Data

[Satnews] An emerging company from the United States providing data processing infrastructure for the Internet of Things will set up in South Australia to help manage the global flow of Big Data.

Buddy Platform is establishing its Australian headquarters in Adelaide, its first office outside Seattle.

The company’s founder and Chief Executive Officer David McLauchlan has spent the past 15 years working for Microsoft in Seattle, founding Buddy Platform, and acting as an advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

McLauchlan said he was approached by almost every Australian state but chose Adelaide because of the lifestyle, ease of movement and the high standard of engineering talent on offer.

He said the Adelaide office working in conjunction with the Seattle operation would increase the company’s span across the day globally.

“There are close to five billion things connected to the Internet this year and that is set to increase 10-fold by the end of the decade,” he said.

"The Internet of Things, where devices communicate with devices, is the next Industrial Revolution. Up until the Internet of Things, companies never had to be responsible for big data, but now they do. Businesses that weren’t traditionally in the data processing game are suddenly finding themselves front and centre in the ‘Internet of Things’ wave. We are proud to make Adelaide home to an innovative, global business at the heart of this Quantified Economy.”

Buddy Platform listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in December. South Australian Investment and Trade Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith said Buddy Platform’s multi-million dollar investment in Adelaide was secured by the newly-established Investment Attraction South Australia.

“Already valued at $669 billion, the Internet of Things will be the foundation for conducting business in the 21st century, and will be based on capturing and translating data from billions of connected devices activated around the world,” Hamilton-Smith said. "Buddy makes this possible, collecting, processing and securing data in real time. It will make Adelaide home to an innovative, global business ready to make commercial success from what is widely expected to be the fastest growing and largest commercial application of the Internet.”

The company will manage, process and host this data in Australian and international data centers, allowing customers around the world to adhere to privacy and data sovereignty regulations.
