This important milestone was reached when the spacecraft was finally enveloped inside an Atlas V four-meter payload fairing. The launch of this important space asset is scheduled to take place during the second week of March, and marks completion of Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) compatibility testing, payload and bus functional testing and propellant load.
“Our first WGS spacecraft is already offering over 10 times the communications capacity as a DSCS satellite,” said Col. Donald Robbins, Wideband Global SATCOM SATCOM Group Commander. “In addition, the number of communications links available provides the warfighters greater connectivity, flexibility and control over the DSCS satellite.”
WGS-1 launched October 10, 2007 and was accepted for operational use April 14, 2008. WGS-3 is scheduled for launch in summer 2009 to complete the Block I program. The WGS Block II program, comprised of WGS-4, WGS-5 and WGS-6, is scheduled to begin launching in 2011. The WGS systems are being procured through the Boeing Company by the Wideband SATCOM Group, part of the MILSATCOM Systems Wing.
