Under the terms of the agreement, Global Vision will actively market IDC’s SuperFlex Pro Cinema product line throughout the Asia Pacific region. The Pro Cinema product line is a family of modular products that can easily be configured to provide a range of end-to-end solutions for the delivery of both file-based movies and live events over a broadband satellite network. The product line features open standards including the latest DVB-S2 broadcast technology with a variety of encryption options and plug and play interoperability with terrestrial Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
The Pro Cinema 3D Live Encoder and Decoder, with leading SENSIO® 3-D technology onboard supports both 2D and 3D live and pre-recorded events, which provides movie houses and other venues increased new revenue opportunities via alternative content programming.
Global Vision has been providing satellite solutions in Asia Pacific region since 1992. The company is now using its ability to integrate uplink, space segment, installation and ongoing management to assist the conversion to digital cinema.
“This agreement with IDC allows Global Vision to actively promote the Pro Cinema product line. There are well over 20,000 screens in this region so there is amazing potential for growth, said Kevin Fleck, General Manager China for Global Vision. “Over the past few years we have seen a slow start to the conversion from celluloid to digital around Asia. However, with the virtual print fee issue now resolved, this growth is set to accelerate quickly. Together with IDC, Global Vision is ideally positioned to bring advanced satellite capability to digital cinema in Asia.”
The growth potential is most clearly seen in India. “We have in excess of 10,000 screens across India and the conversion to digital is only now beginning,” said Siddharth Lulla, General Manager, Global Vision India. “Equipping these locations to receive live from satellite will create a new market as the regional cinemas are able to screen live content for the first time. IDC’s high level security will also go a long way to combating the piracy that is bleeding the Indian film industry,” added Lulla.
“It is a pleasure to welcome Global Vision to our worldwide distribution team. We are confident that this agreement is a positive step in IDC’s expansion in this market. With our established base in the United States and recently announced contracts for new networks in Europe, IDC’s digital cinema distribution technology is quickly gaining recognition as the global market leader and is poised to become the de facto standard for the distribution of digital content to theaters,” said Ron Clifton, IDC President and CEO.
