Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA)—New Strategies Outlined (Government Agency—Policies)

[SatNews] The Defense Information Systems Agency released the agency’s 2014-2019 Strategic Plan on May 12th.

This updated strategy replaces the 2013-2018 Strategic Plan and rescinds the earlier DISA 2012 Campaign Plan. In his “Director’s Intent” in the plan, Air Force Lt. Gen. Ronnie D. Hawkins Jr. explained the changing environment that necessitated a shift in the agency’s strategy.

“Our nation and our leadership have emphatically stated we must transition, as we conclude 13 years of war. Not only must we transition to a post-conflict and financially constrained era, but we must also transition to a smaller, yet equally lethal military. Our focus must be on cybersecurity sovereignty, agility, and innovation, given its more dominant role today,” said Hawkins.

The strategic goals and key objectives of the agency address the director’s focus areas as they are also aligned with recent DoD guidance, including the Quadrennial Defense Review and the chairman’s “2nd Term Strategic Direction to the Joint Force.” This strategic plan also revalidates the agency vision and mission statement and incorporates the new DISA ethos and core values to guide the workforce in their support to the warfighter.

Hawkins lays out seven agency focus areas, which are directly tied to four strategic goals and subordinate key objectives. These focus areas include:

  • The Joint Information Environment.
  • National Leadership and Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications Support.
  • Cyber Operations and Mission Assurance.
  • Acquisition Agility.
  • Global Defense Posture.
  • Department of Defense Cloud Services.
  • Mobility Initiatives.

An updated target objective state and technology watch list for the 2014-2019 are also included in the plan.

DISA will accommodate the communications and information-sharing network needs for the joint force of the future by incorporating this strategy in our day-to-day operations to build the DISA of tomorrow.
