Trio Of Launch Vehicles Now Residing At Spaceport In French Guiana

Arianespace Ariane 5 arriving @ Spaceport Another Ariane 5 launch vehicle has been delivered to French Guiana, underscoring Arianespace's ability to support a sustained mission pace with its workhorse heavy-lift launcher.

Components for the vehicle arrived this week aboard the MN Toucan roll-on/roll-off ship, which docked at Pariacabo port near Kourou. The launcher elements were then transferred by road to the Spaceport, where they will be positioned for Arianespace's fourth flight of 2009. With the latest delivery, there are now a total of three Ariane 5s currently are present at the Spaceport in various forms. The Ariane 5 ECA for Arianespace's upcoming mission — scheduled for a May 6 liftoff — is in the Final Assembly Building, awaiting the integration of its two payloads. This will be the second Ariane 5 flight of 2009 and is to carry the European Space Agency's Herschel space telescope and Planck observatory, both of which are designed to yield new data on the universe's birth and the formation of stars.
