The largest, in the Caramulo mountains of central Portugal, claimed the lives of five firefighters by August 30. This image, from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite, shows the Carmulo fire on August 29. Dense smoke pours from the fire and drifts west over the Atlantic Ocean. The fires are outlined in red. More than 31,000 hectares (77,000 acres) have burned in Portugal in 2013.
