The XMC-280 provides an open standard-based high performance real-time embedded systems solution for capturing, compressing, decompressing and displaying two video channels of 1080-pixel, 1920 by 1200 resolutions. Designed for demanding HD video with JPEG2000 compression, the XMC-280 facilitates the design of systems that require the distribution or recording of video such as those in situational awareness applications. In real time embedded systems, JPEG2000 offers better quality than MPEG at higher compression ratios and, as each frame is compressed individually, there is no dependence on preceding or subsequent frames. This frame-by-frame compression results in lower latency and greater resistance to errors in transmission. Using the XMC-280 several channels of HD video can be distributed over standard gigabit Ethernet networks in excellent quality and with minimal latency. Details are retained at 50:1 compression at which eight 1080p60 channel could be transmitted over one gigabit Ethernet. The XMC-280 is supported on Intel x86 and Power PC hosts under Windows, Linux and VxWorks and, as an industry-standard XMC-format module, it can be deployed in a variety of system types such as PCs and embedded rack-mount displays.
