They've got a group with plenty of industry expertise, and now they've combined their talents and energy to bring advanced datacenter and cloud virtualization technology into space for the first time that will enable space application developers to build, test and simulate their applications without the need to build or launch a satellite.
The company is Vector, a micro satellite space launch company comprised of new-space and enterprise software industry veterans from SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, McDonnell Douglas, Sea Launch and VMware, which announced that it will join forces with Citrix to bring advanced datacenter and cloud virtualization technology into space for the first time through the development of a software defined satellite platform with Vector's GalacticSky solution.
Citrix and Vector will work together to enhance Citrix XenServer for space use and validate Vector's GalacticOS, a purpose built satellite app operating system that enables entrepreneurs to easily develop space based applications.
Shaun Coleman, General Manager and Senior VP, GalacticSky of Vector commented that the commercial space industry is booming and with so many new opportunities and capabilities available to entrepreneurs, their GalacticSky solution is well positioned to help innovators achieve their dreams of reaching the Final Frontier. Integrating payload software into a completely virtualized satellites alongside Citrix, allows Vector to cut down mission implementation from years to days, and furthers Vector's vision of lowering the barriers of space access.
The GalacticSky software defined satellite solution from Vector will enable space application developers to build, test and simulate their applications without the need to build or launch a satellite. Using on orbit resources that can be dynamically configured, space entrepreneurs can test out ideas in near real-time without the cost or time required to launch a satellite. Utilizing Citrix XenServer, a comprehensive cloud proven server virtualization platform, GalacticSky will reduce the burden of developing and launching space hardware by removing this component altogether, revolutionizing the way innovators and entrepreneurs develop solutions for space.
Calvin Hsu, vice president, product marketing, Citrix added that Citrix believes in transformation through innovation, and through this collaboration with Vector they see their technology paving the way for future entrepreneurs in space for years to come. This is an example of how Citrix continues to help developers embrace the future of work, and reimagine how work gets done.
