...2012 IEEE Outstanding Technology Recognition Award for “...collaboratively conducting research and developing an anti-intrusion RFID technology to ensure container security for the Canadian Forces". TekTrap’s CargoKeeper is a conveyance security device that reports on the real time status of ISO shipping containers. It monitors movement, temperature and light conditions so the owner can monitor the status of the container. TekTrap combined its CargoKeeper sensors with the Track24 Defence military grade satellite tracking device, the Whisper. The Whisper sent TekTrap’s telemetry on the status of the containers, wherever they were in the world, via satellite to CANOSCOM HQ. CANOSCOM was alerted to any unauthorized attempts to open or move containers in near real time and was also sent regular GPS updates.

Giles Peeters, defence sector director at Track24 Defence, said, "Thousands of ISO containers are shipped to and from conflict zones by Canadian DND every year. They often contain specialized, expensive equipment ranging from helicopter engines to weapons. Before now, the first sign an ISO container had been tampered with or moved inappropriately would be when the shipping container docks and all cargo is accounted for. This is often too late for the DND to do anything about it. Combining TekTrap's sensors with our beyond line of sight, affordable satellite technology and situational command and control network enables Canadian forces ISO visibility thousands of miles from the country’s shores, and in the longer term could save tens of thousands of dollars in lost equipment as well as improving supply chain efficiency."

Track24 Defence and TekTrap were awarded the project in June this year and completed an early version of the solution suitable for trial with DND in September. The IEEE awards are presented to organisations that produce products and technology that benefit Canada.
