L-3 Communications Technology Enables Apache Helicopters To Reap Comms Capabilities With UAVs

[SatNews] L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) has won a new communications upgrade subcontract from Science and Engineering Services LLC in support of the U.S. Army’s Apache helicopter program.

L-3’s technology will deliver high-speed transmit and receive capability of wideband video and data to increase communications capacity between the Apache and unmanned systems.

Under the initial $11.9 million, L-3 will deliver its MUMT-X communications suite with a ROVER 6 modem, multiband radio-frequency equipment, and a directional antenna capable of relaying multiple video streams back to the command center. MUMT-X, designed to increase Apache aircrews’ situational awareness and combat effectiveness while shortening decision-making timelines, is based on the MUMT-2 system and its interoperability, reliability, and ability to meet mission objectives, officials say.

Work on this project is now underway at L-3 Communication Systems-West in Salt Lake City, with completion anticipated in August 2017.
