[SatNews] The frigid temps in the southern U.S. are record breaking and noteworthy in magnitude.
A major winter storm is affecting parts of the Southeast with dangerous ice and snow and is expected to intensify Wednesday evening as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard, affecting locations across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. More than one inch of ice accumulation is possible from central Georgia into South Carolina through Thursday morning.
These images show the most recent image of the United States, from NOAA geostationary (GOES) satellites. They are generated every 30 minutes using either the Visible, Infrared, Shortwave Infrared (4um), or the Water Vapor images into one larger composite image using GOES East and West Imagers.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATED SNOW WAS BEGINNING TO SPREAD NORTHWARD INTO NORTH CAROLINA.
BUT FARTHER SOUTH...SNOW HAD CHANGED OVER TO FREEZING RAIN FROM WILMINGTON NORTH CAROLINA WESTWARD ACROSS CENTRAL SOUTH CAROLINA...INTO NORTHERN-CENTRAL GEORGIA AND NORTHERN ALABAMA.
