HRL Laboratories, LLC, is a corporate research-and-development laboratory owned by The Boeing Company and General Motors. The lab specializes in research into sensors and materials, information and systems sciences, applied electromagnetics, and microelectronics. Now named as the President and CEO of HRL is Dr. William A. Jeffrey. Previously, Dr. Jeffrey was the Director of the Science and Technology Division for the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). Prior to joining IDA, he served in the Bush Administration as the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the Department of Commerce. Dr. Jeffrey also served as Senior Director for Homeland and National Security and the Assistant Director for Space and Aeronautics at the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) within the Executive Office of the President. Prior to OSTP, he was the Deputy Director for the Advanced Technology Office and Chief Scientist for the Tactical Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). While at DARPA, he developed research programs in communications, computer network security, novel sensor development, and space operations. Dr. Jeffrey began his professional career at IDA.
