ViaSat Enters Paradise

Paradise Datacomm Evolution modems Paradise Datacom has reached an agreement with ViaSat Inc. to embed the latter's Paired Carrier Multiple Access (PCMA) technology into Paradise Datacom modems for improved bandwidth efficiency. PCMA is a patented ViaSat technology combining send and receive signals into the same bandwidth. The technology can achieve up to 100 percent reuse in space segment allocation, providing significant cost savings. Paradise Datacom will incorporate the PCMA feature into its new “Quantum” satellite modems. In addition to ViaSat PCMA technology, the Quantum modem will also include industry leading IP and DVB-S/S2 features. The DVB-S2 chip is being supplied by ViaSat subsidiary, Efficient Channel Coding (ECC). The ECC SkyPHY™ receiver chip merges advanced Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), Forward Error Correction (FEC), and ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) technologies to add the power and bandwidth efficiencies of open standard DVB-S2 to Quantum. ViaSat PCMA technology improves bandwidth efficiency by allowing individual transmit and receive carriers to occupy the same frequency spectrum simultaneously. A terminal equipped with PCMA then cancels the transmit carrier to identify information received from any other transmitting location.
