Of Interest to SatBroadcasting™ Professionals...

  • At NAB, Appear TV (Booth SU5517) will show two of the latest editions to its product range that are designed to help North American broadcasters and operators to overcome the challenges associated the expansion of TV services. The company will show a high density bulk descrambler and an advanced MPEG-2/4 SD and HD decoder, designed to help cable operators/cable MSOs to evolve, innovate and grow smarter. One of the major challenges facing broadcasters and operators is delivering an increasing number of channels [increasingly HD] in order to meet consumer demands in a cost-effective manner, and without adding complexity to their transport operations. Appear TV solutions demonstrated will include:

    • High Density Descrambling - The Appear TV high-density bulk descrambler module allows broadcasters and operators to descramble up to 250 services using a single 1RU chassis. Supporting both DVB-CA and AES descrambling, Appear TV provides a flexible solution for operators looking to increase the number of channels it can offer, while protecting the content on their networks. The module also integrates with any software-based conditional access (CA) solution and provides operators looking to resell channels on a single IP backbone with the perfect way of handling the required shift from DVB to AES scrambling
    • High Definition Decoding – Appear TV’s new advanced MPEG-4 HD decoder module enables up to 30 HD channels to be decoded in either SD/HD or MPEG-4 AVC/SD/HD format, including HD to SD down-conversion. The module also enables SD/HD-SDI output with embedded audio. The new multi-format decoder module fits into the DC1x00/SC2x00/MC3x00 series of products – enabling it to be used in combination with any input and output modules. This new module is of particular interest to cable operators because it enables them to take advantage of the increasing commercial opportunities for HD content, without the incremental cost and complexity of traditional multi-format topologies.

  • Civolution will be demonstrating several of its products from its extensive portfolio at this year’s NAB show. Civolution’s solutions include cutting edge watermarking and fingerprinting technology applications for audience measurement, and forensic marking of media assets in pre-release, digital cinema, PayTV and online. Civolution offers the most comprehensive broadcast monitoring and online content identification, and monetization to facilitate and manage profitable content distribution. At its booth (SU5906), Civolution will be demonstrating its forensic watermarking for payTV and pre-release content, and its Teletrax TV and Internet monitoring service. Also on show will be its Mediahedge content identification and monetization platform, which contains the industry’s leading content identification database. NAB sees Civolution demonstrate new Media Synchronization and Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) applications, which enable synchronization of content between TV and other devices – such as tablets and mobiles - but also to automatically trigger events such as advertisement insertions and TV overlays. In this new ‘TV anywhere’ media universe with smart TVs and mobile devices, Civolution’s content identification technologies will become pivotal in allowing meaningful interactivities between content owners, advertisers and their audience.

  • The growing accessibility of broadband capacity, the progress of internet content delivery technology and the availability of hybrid STBs/connected TVs are changing the traditional TV services offering. The EPG – the most widely adopted interactive TV service – can also benefit from the development of hybrid solutions, by offering traditional EPG data from the broadcast and advanced rich media content from the broadband, as long as the STB is connected. It is the perfect solution for hybrid networks who wish to make enhanced EPG available to their subscribers. On the broadcast side, PrimeEPG is based on the HTTVStream EIT head-end solution combined with a dedicated HTTV Event Information System (EIS) module. It offers various editing and management operations: scheduling, search by criteria, timeline, previews and import from content provider or live re-injection. If the STB is broadband connected, the PrimeEPG web server will offer rich media content and advanced EPG including access to catch up programs and VOD. As a powerful event centric management solution, PrimeEPG can address other screens (web, mobile...) as well as interact with social network applications based on TV events.

  • Triveni Digital will showcase its enhanced GuideBuilder® NRT (non-real-time) metadata platform at the 2011 NAB Show. The industry-leading GuideBuilder system — now featuring mobile service support with Electronic Service Guide (ESG) functionality for program content as well as interstitials and channel logos — offers broadcasters a unified solution for metadata and data management for PSIP, mobile ESG, and NRT services. Engineered in accordance with the new Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Mobile DTV A/153 Part 4 standard (Electronic Service Guide), which was developed under the leadership of Triveni Digital's CTO, Richard Chernock, the GuideBuilder's mobile capabilities ensure up-to-date scheduling and tuning, managed through the operator's existing workflow components. Through the existing connections, these same workflow components are used for scheduling NRT services and interactive elements of mobile services. As the ATSC continues development of an end-to-end standard for NRT services, Triveni Digital will continue to incorporate support for those advanced offerings into the GuideBuilder product line. Thus, the widely-deployed GuideBuilder infrastructure will continue to enable broadcasters' straightforward extension of existing workflows. Another enhancement to the GuideBuilder system is an open ESG carouselling interface for multiplexers. Designed to support centralcasting applications, the interface is compatible with products from a growing vendor list including Axcera, DTVinteractive, LARCAN, and Rohde & Schwarz.
