NAB 2012... The World Of 3D... (Event)

[SatNews] The technologies and the processes of 3D content creation are discussed by various luminaries within this environment... here are but three of the sessions being offered during NAB 2012.
On Monday, April 16th from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., in room number S222, Vince Pace and James Cameron's company CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) will reveal the strategy and the details behind 5D productions, including the ESPN Winter X Games, where 35 rigs were used to accomplish the largest 5D production in history. See how only the 5D methodology enables broadcasters to increase revenue by integrating 3D into their existing 2D business model. Before CPG, broadcasters were unable to make a viable business case for 3D. But now, CPG's 5D solutions enable crews to shoot 2D and 3D at the same time, without a significant increase in production cost or personnel. By focusing on meeting the creative, technical, and cost demands of productions, CPG elevates the entertainment experience while making 3D profitable for broadcasters and filmmakers.

The "Brave New World of Filmmaking with Digital Technologies will be presented on Monday, April 16th, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in room S220. From 4K and high frame rate acquisition, to production design with 3D software, from virtual shot choreography and compositing, to fully functional, immersive CG sets, new digital techniques are transforming the art and craft of filmmaking. They are opening the doors to new forms of storytelling, upending historical ways of doing things and altering how department heads collaborate. Join leading filmmakers from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Cinematographers, Art Directors and Visual Effects Branches as they look at the benefits and challenges of creating motion pictures with new digital technologies, showing clips and citing their work on some of Hollywood’s most honored and revolutionary projects. The speakers include Rick Carter, "Avatar," "War Horse"; Caleb Deschanel, ASC, "Spiderwick Chronicles," "National Treasure"; Scott Farrar, ASC, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Minority Report"

Wendy Aylsworth, Warner Bros., Martin Banks, University of California, Berkeley, Siegfried Foessel, Frauhofer IIS, Nick Mitchell, Technicolor Digital Cinema, and Phil Oatley, Park Road Post Production LTD, will be speaking on High Frame Rate Stereoscopic 3D on Sunday, April 15th, from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. in room S222. Higher Frame Rate (HFR) 3D has become of great interest to the creatives, including such notables as James Cameron and Peter Jackson, as a way to improve overall 3D presentation quality. Both are pursuing projects to produce 3D at high frame rates. In this session, explored will be some of the scientific, technical, and business issues this creative direction elicits, including: the science of Higher Frame Rate 3D perception; production issues in HFR 3D content creation including 48 to 24 FPS conversion, subtitling creation, wide shutter angle capture, etc.; HFR 3D theatrical distribution challenges; and, post-theatrical HFR 3D distribution issues.
