With 16 commercial GEO communications satellites ordered in the first half of 2008, the satellite industry looks set to continue its strong performance following three years of sustained order of satellite manufacturing and launch service averaging 25 units per year, i.e. a market of almost $5 billion per year. Reports reveal that most satellites ordered in recent years are replacements of in-orbit satellites that are aged or plagued with technical problems. However, several satellites were ordered by new operators (e.g. Protostar, Viasat, Vinasat, S2M) or by existing operators that open new orbital slots. The cyclical high in the comsat market results from growing demands in all segments of satcom services. While TV broadcasting applications remain at the top of the list (DTH, HDTV, IPTV, CATV, DTT, mobile TV, broadband communications), both fixed and mobile are also dynamic in several regions of the world.
