digiGO! — The Digital (R)Evolution™

  • Envivio 4Caster C42 Envivio, Inc. debuted their 4Caster C42, the 2G of the company’s Convergence Series video encoding/transcoding platform. 4Caster C42 uses the performance of the latest generation Intel multi-core server processors to deliver better quality video, make more efficient use of bandwidth and enable delivery of HD video services to all three consumer screens. The 4Caster C42 joins the 4Caster C4 in the Convergence Series, building on the features of its precursor and giving service providers flexibility to tailor their video headend to match their requirements. The new platform is debuting during IBC2009 at Stand 1.D72. The enhanced performance of 4Caster C42 extends the capabilities of the codec technologies developed by Envivio to further enable delivery of the best quality video within the tight bandwidth tolerances of different networks and applications. The new Envivio Extreme HD compression is exclusive to 4Caster C42 and enables operators to deliver a best-quality HD experience to IPTV subscribers using just 4 Mbps. For Internet TV, even lower bitrates are possible and can be combined with adaptive bitrate technologies such as Silverlight Smooth Streaming HD, Flash HD and Apple adaptive streaming to enable quality delivery over networks with no guaranteed QoS. 4Caster C42 supports all Envivio compressions levels for IPTV, Mobile TV and Internet TV. The new 4Caster C42 leverages its increased processing power to add support for H.264 over IP input as well as spatial de-noising filters for HD content that corrects visual errors from HD video sources.

  • intoPIX Pristine JPEG2000 board intoPIX showcases at IBC2009 its new OEM PRISTINE JPEG 2000 board — this is a PCIe x8 board designed to handle uncompressed audiovisual material for its compression and decompression with JPEG 2000, faster than real-time. PRISTINE also provides a 3GSDI interface with four 3G inputs and outputs. PRISTINE supports virtually all SD, HD, 2K and 4K formats and offers embedded audio channels. Up to four 3G-SDI links 4:4:4 are supported simultaneously. The new I/O board is ideal for implementing stereoscopic, multi-channel and multiscreen applications. PRISTINE also integrates the new intoPIX SDK for maximum flexibility. A wide range of applications can be addressed using PRISTINE: Digital Cinema, Audiovisual Lossless Archiving, 3G Contribution, 3D Stereoscopy and Ultra-High-Resolution applications.

  • Mindspeed logo Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD) has intro'd their dual-channel backplane equalizer and re-driver, optimized for serial digital interface (SDI) applications in the broadcast video market. With excellent jitter performance and less than 50mW typical power consumption per channel, the device joins Mindspeed’s low-power SDI product family, including the industry’s first low-power multi-channel/rate chipset with dual-cable equalizer and driver, and quad video reclocker. Each independent channel in Mindspeed’s M21004 backplane equalizer and re-driver features pin-configurable input equalization and output de-emphasis, enabling it to compensate for losses accumulated across long traces and connectors. In addition, an integrated, non-blocking 2x2 crosspoint switch provides the functions of signal splitting, switching, and multiplexing within the same small form factor.

  • TANDBERG EN8100 encoder TANDBERG Television, part of the Ericsson Group (NASDAQ:ERIC), has announced Arqiva has deployed new MPEG-2 video compression to update its U.K. digital terrestrial (DTT) transmission infrastructure. Crucial to this deal is the recently announced TANDBERG EN8100, a powerful, high density MPEG-2 broadcast encoder. The new TANDBERG Television compression system has enabled Arqiva to add two additional channels per 16QAM multiplex and to achieve an improvement in picture quality. The two additional channels bring incremental revenue to Arqiva, provide more choice to the consumers of the highly successful U.K. Freeview DTT service, and demonstrate the technology gains of the TANDBERG EN8100 in tightly constrained environments. The TANDBERG MPEG-2 solution for Arqiva includes compression, multiplexing and systems management, as well as project integration and commissioning. A number of test platforms and two live platforms were all delivered within agreed timescales. The TANDBERG EN8100 will be demonstrated at IBC, along with a number of other compression industry firsts, on the joint Ericsson and TANDBERG Television booth (1:D61).
