iDirect will build features into its iDX platform operating software enabling partners to access O3b’s Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite network through the Evolution DVB-S2/ACM product line. O3b Networks plans to deploy a 16-satellite MEO constellation to create a satellite-based global Internet backbone. Satellites will orbit at 8,000 km and operate in Ka-band, which will significantly reduce latency and achieve fiber-like data speeds and response times. The O3b Networks constellation will provide a critical influx of cost-effective, high-speed satellite capacity for iDirect’s partners. Such will provide a major opportunity to expand cellular backhaul, broadband IP connectivity, and other satellite services. In addition, the O3b Networks system will enable service providers to connect directly to 3G, 4G and WiMax cell towers, virtually eliminating the need for major capital expenditure on international backbone trunking.
