- Open For Business — The new laboratory and office building were inaugurated on October 13th — the 68 staff members of the Institute of Space Systems (Institut fur Raumfahrtsysteme) of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) have initiated their scientific duties at DLR's new Bremen site. The new DLR institute will focus specifically on developing space systems and will implement new, innovative technologies and procedures that will enable space missions to be realized more efficiently and economically.
- Moving On Up — ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) has appointed Carol Zierhoffer chief information officer, reporting to ITT Chief Executive Officer Steve Loranger. She was also elected a vice president of the corporation by the ITT Board of Directors. Before joining ITT, Zierhoffer was vice president and chief information officer for Northrop Grumman Corporation's Mission Systems Sector. Effective immediately, Zierhoffer, 48, will assume responsibility for the strategic planning, alignment, governance and delivery of all information technology (IT) products and services for ITT. In doing so, she will partner with all areas of the company to ensure the IT organization is a key enabler of growth across the enterprise.

- Business — Stratos Global Corporation has reached a milestone of 10,000 BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) activations. Stratos, whose service was announced in late 2005, is the first Inmarsat Distribution Partner to reach this impressive BGAN sales milestone. Stratos is a distributor of Inmarsat's BGAN service, a mobile satellite offering that uses portable, lightweight terminals to provide simultaneous, high-speed data (up to 492 kbps) and voice connectivity anywhere in the world. BGAN enables communication in areas where terrestrial or cellular networks are damaged, congested, non-existent, or too difficult to deploy.
