For the fourth consecutive year, SkyWave Mobile Communications and its partner, Rivercross Tracking, provided near real-time vehicle tracking services of off-road cars taking part in the annual Rhino Charge race held in Kenya. For this year’s event, 58 vehicles were outfitted with SkyWave SureLinx 8100 satellite/cellular tracking devices provided by SkyWave and monitored by Rivercross Tracking.

Within a 10 hour period, participating vehicles were required to reach 13 control points scattered over approximately 100 square km of rough terrain. SureLinx devices mounted on each vehicle provided detailed position information to Rivercross’ fleet management software, even in areas where no cellular communication service exists throughout the race.  In addition to sending progress reports for scorekeeping, each of the SureLinx 8100 tracking devices were also equipped with a panic button that would alert Rivercross Tracking and rescue crews via satellite of the vehicle’s location in the event of an emergency. This year Rivercross Tracking was appointed the official scorekeeper for the event and was responsible for determining the winning competitor who was able to visit the most control points in the shortest distance based on GPS mileage sent by SureLinx 8100 devices and calculated using Rivercross’ fleet management software.
