Wavestream BUCs Up TeleCommunication Systems

Wavestream Matchbox Block Upconveters (BUC) Wavestream Corporation has received initial orders for its Ku-band and Ka-band Matchbox Block Upconverters (BUCs) from TeleCommunication Systems, Inc.(TCS) (Nasdaq: TSYS). The BUCs will be integrated into TCSSwiftLink® product line for its U.S. Army Program and will include 40-Watt Ku-band and 12-Watt Ka-band Matchbox solid-state power amplifiers, which lead the industry in compactness and efficiency. Wavestream’s 40-watt Ku-band BUC and 12-watt Ka-band BUC each weigh 9 pounds and share mounting configurations, simplifying field changes between frequency bands. TCS' SwiftLink Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) will provide multimedia communications capabilities to convey encrypted voice, video, and imagery data. The U.S. Army is acquiring TCS' VSATs through the US$5 billion World-Wide Satellite Systems (WWSS) contract vehicle, which is available to support all federal communications missions, including disaster relief and homeland security efforts. Wavestream’s proprietary spatial power combining technologies require substantially less semiconductor content than traditional technologies to produce equivalent output power. The lower semiconductor content drives lower weight, smaller size, greater efficiency and lower cost.
