WTA... Teleport Greening

The World Teleport Association (WTA) has released a new white paper, Strategies for Sustainability. The report presents WTA’s findings and outcomes from its March 2010 Member Forum on the Green Teleport as well as in-depth interviews conducted with early adopters of advanced energy management solutions among the Association's membership.

The report identifies several key business drivers for investing money and time into making teleports more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable including an attractive return on investment; regulatory mandates; rising demand from customers; energy market volatility; public perception; and revenue opportunities. Three WTA member companies — SES, Newcom International, and Globecomm — presented their green initiatives during the March Member Forum. Each chose to focus on a different aspect of the green opportunity and each has realized positive results from their efforts. Strategies for Sustainability outlines the green initiatives, decision-making and results for each of the member companies.

“For most teleport operators, the green movement is still in the early adopter stage,” said Robert Bell, WTA Executive Director. “However, as we heard throughout the Green Teleport Campaign and echoed again during the March Member Forum, these early adopters are moving quickly to implement change and seeing payback in one to two years with all subsequent savings going to their bottom line. The green movement isn’t a fad though. Major customers are asking teleport operators what they are doing to make their operations more sustainable. The majority of companies interviewed also expected to create business opportunities from their green investments. That is a major incentive to push forward with innovative new initiatives.”
