Responsibilities For Indian UAV Program Still To Be Sorted Out

India's RUSTOM UAV Rustom, a medium altitude, long endurance, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), has been approved by the Indian Government for development and production. The Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) will select a partner from India as part of this indigenous, Rs.1,000 crore project.

Normally such a project would be handled by labs under the guidance of the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). However, the DRDO is now looking at different ways in which then can ensure vehicle engineering and production issues are examined simultaneously, eliminating previous time delays, ineffective project management, and non-viability of the finished product. This time around, it is hoped the agency responsible for the Rustom's production will also develop the expertise and infrastructure to product completion and support. According to The Hindu, Tatas, Larsen and Toubro, Godrej, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-Bharat Electronics (a JV bid) will receive RFPs for the UAV project, with the selection to occur by next February. Financial stakes in Rustom must be committed by the Indian Armed Forces as well as the project developers.
