O3b Networks Limited, the developer of a new global, high-speed, satellite Internet network for telecommunications operators and ISPs, has appointed Mark Rigolle as Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect. Mr. Rigolle succeeds Greg Clarke, who is stepping down for personal reasons but will continue to support O3b as member of the board.
Mr. Rigolle was previously Chief Financial Officer of SES, having joined the global satellite operator in August 2004 from Belgacom, where he held various positions in the financial and strategic areas and was the project leader for Belgacom's successful IPO. O3b stands for the "Other 3 billion", a reference to nearly half of the world's population that is not adequately served with broadband Internet access. The company is currently developing a high-speed, satellite Internet network for telecommunications operators and ISPs. It aims to provide cost-effective broadband connectivity for developing markets. In November 2009, SES made a minority investment in O3b to support the development of O3b’s satellite-based, global internet backbone. SES has invested US$75m in O3b and is providing a range of operational services including sales, network operations, satellite operations and global regulatory support.
