Inmarsat... Solos Setting Sail (SATCOM)

[SatNews] Competitors in the 2010-11 Velux 5 Oceans round-the-world yacht race will relay video action of sailing's ultimate solo challenge using FleetBroadband.

Each yacht will be fitted with a Thrane & Thrane Sailor 250 FleetBroadband terminal and M-Link Voyager video editing and compression software. The competitors will be able to send video clips and photos from wherever they are along the 30,000-nautical mile (48,000km) route to keep the world's media and race fans up with the race.

The nine Eco 60 yachts will each have three video cameras mounted on deck in waterproof cases, along with a Sony Handycam, and a water and shockproof Olympic compact camera. The Velux 5 Oceans, organised by Clipper Ventures, is the longest-running solo round-the-world race, having taken place under various names for 28 years. The 2010 race will start from La Rochelle, France, in October, taking in Cape Town, Wellington in New Zealand, Salvador in Brazil, and Charleston in the US before returning across the Atlantic.
