African Cellular Backhaul Net Gets Comtech Technology

Comtech's CDM-QxL satmodem Comtech Telecommunications Corp.'s Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., has won a US$1.1 million equipment order to support a satellite communications-based cellular backhaul network. A major GSM operator will use the equipment to upgrade an existing network in the West Africa region. The order specified the CDM-QxL Multi-Channel Satellite Modems with DoubleTalk(R) Carrier-in-Carrier(R). Carrier-in-Carrier is based on Applied Signal Technology's DoubleTalk bandwidth compression technology. DoubleTalk uses "Adaptive Cancellation," a patented technology that allows the transmit and receive carriers of a full-duplex satellite link to be transmitted in the same transponder space. When combined with advanced forward error correction and modulation techniques, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier can deliver unprecedented operating expense savings. In addition, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier can provide capital expenditure savings by allowing a smaller BUC/HPA and/or antenna.
