digiGO! — Globecomm's DTH Case Work In India

Globecomm Systems Inc will make available a case study examining the company’s recently completed state-of-the art Media Processing Center in New Delhi, India.

The Center provides program origination for Bharti Airtel’s new DTH service.  There were several components in the design of the broadcast center that had never been attempted before, which the case study highlights.  The case study will be available at Globecomm’s booth at the upcoming CommunicAsia 2009 exhibition, June 16-19, in Singapore.

There was no template for Globecomm as it began work to design the broadcast center.  According to Dov Cydulkin, Globecomm’s Vice President for the Asia-Pacific, the architecture required that every piece of equipment be selected with the future in mind.  Bharti Airtel is India's largest mobile carrier with a 25 percent share of the national market.  While considering the DTH business, it saw immense opportunity among its subscriber base, according to the report.  That opportunity is being pursued with the competitive DTH service in place.  Bharti has been able to begin to go to market through 21,000 retail outlets in 62 cities, as well as by focusing offers on nearly 80 million mobile subs.  In addition to the immediate DTH opportunity, Bharti is thinking long-term.  The consumption of video entertainment is undergoing a revolution, and the company wanted to position itself to enter emerging markets for video-on-demand, IPTV and mobile video with an economical and future-proof solution.  This put additional pressures on Globecomm, which designed and integrated the facility, using a host of systems.  The case study emphasizes the constant focus on the future in every aspect of the construction.
