digiGO! — Multiformat Importance No Longer WEARing, Thanx To Kahuna

Snell Kahuna photo A Snell Kahuna SD/HD multiformat production switcher is playing a pivotal role in the new HD news simulcast of WEAR ABC 3, an ABC affiliate station owned by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group.

The station was the first in its Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, market to launch a local newscast in HD, driven in large part by the Kahuna's ability to mix in content seamlessly from a variety of SD sources. WEAR is one of 58 stations owned by Sinclair, which has standardized all of its news-producing facilities on the Kahuna switcher. In preparation for the HD launch of its six daily newscasts, WEAR installed a new digital control room and rebuilt its news set — but acquisition and mobile newsgathering equipment remained SD-based. As a true multiformat switcher that can simultaneously manage SD and HD operations, the Kahuna has provided a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution for WEAR to mix the content from these SD sources into the HD newscasts without having to purchase external conversion equipment or upgrade cameras and other production equipment to native HD.
