Mobile Upper Atmospheric Measuring From Smiths Detection

Smiths Detection MMSP unit Smiths Detection has received a $19.3 million contract from the U.S. Army for Meteorological Measuring Set-Profiler (MMS-P) systems, taking the total Program value to over $89 million.

The sophisticated upper atmospheric measuring systems are used to extend the accuracy of field artillery. Deliveries will start in October 2009. Accessing real-time atmospheric data to provide comprehensive updates, the MMS-P incorporates information from varied sources including satellites, ground sensors, and weather balloons. The system uses a customized version of the MM5, the most widely used and accepted mesoscale meteorological model in the world and also features an enhanced radiosonde system, including a simplified operator interface. The advanced MMS-P delivers more accurate atmospheric updates than earlier generation systems and expands the range of field by 200 percent. The system is built into a specially equipped HMMWV vehicle, making the system highly mobile. MMS-P systems are currently in use worldwide by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army National Guard.
