Newtec TelliCast diagram TelliCast multicast software from Newtec is helping EUMETSAT to increase its customer base towards the 3,000 mark as customers look to improve their forecasting accuracy. MEDIA BROADCAST, EUMETSAT’s turnkey solution provider, selected Newtec’s TelliCast IP multicast software for an initial pilot program in 2002. The results were so convincing the EUMETCast service — developed to disseminate meteorological data collected by its satellites — was expanded and launched in 2003 in order to support the distribution of an increasing amount of meteorological data and the growing community of users.
EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, was created in 1986 to monitor weather from space. Since its creation, EUMETSAT has been contributing a wealth of reliable and high-quality satellite data which is used in numerical weather prediction models that have helped to significantly improve forecasting accuracy, especially of severe weather and weather-related disasters. EUMETSAT’s satellites also provide reliable measurements which can assist scientists in monitoring and understanding factors that contribute to changes in climate and our environment. EUMETCast is a highly reliable and secure meteorological data distribution service, which is based on standard DVB IP multicast technology and can therefore be received by using off-the-shelf DTH satellite reception equipment. TelliCast is an IP multicast datacasting software platform for the reliable distribution of files and data streams for various applications. It consists of a server software component combined with a set of software clients that can be installed on computers or embedded into a variety of receiver devices.
