[SatNews] Boeing's [NYSE: BA] Space and Intelligence Systems (S&IS) division has received a Maturity Level 3 recertification of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) for hardware and systems development. "This CMMI Level 3 rating is a significant accomplishment, given that less than 2 percent of organizations with more than 2,000 employees are able to achieve that level," said Craig Cooning, S&IS vice president and general manager. "Boeing's S&IS organization includes more than 5,000 employees."

The Level 3 rating indicates that S&IS has successfully met the CMMI global benchmark to define the quality processes critical to its manufacturing performance. It confirms that the division's business processes are well characterized and effectively used to establish consistency across the organization. A third-party team of auditors spent two weeks evaluating 2,930 documents and interviewing almost 200 engineers, business leaders and program managers before recertifying the Level 3 rating on April 23. The programs represented in the appraisal included Wideband Global SATCOM, Intelsat, the K-L series of Tracking and Data Relay Satellites, and proprietary programs.



CMMI is a standard used worldwide to help organizations adopt best practices for development and maintenance activities that cover the product lifecycle from conception through delivery and maintenance. CMMI is managed by Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense.
