From a story written by Andrew Williams in gas2.0's online site, a group of University of Michigan students have set a new world record for the longest flight by a fuel-cell powered plane... actually, a UAV. With a construction cost of $2,500, the plane managed a flight time of 10 hours and 15 minutes, annihilating the previous record set by an engineering firm in California. The UAV was named
Endurance and was created by a group of aerospace engineering undergrads.
Adaptive Materials supplied the fuel cells. The goal of the group is to fly a fuel cell powered plane for 24 hours, which they hope to accomplish during the spring of 2009. The photo of Endurance is courtesy of the team who call themselves
SolarBubbles.
