ATIS... An Alert For Alerts (CMAS)

[SatNews] The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) recently completed a standard which enables the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) to be broadcast over LTE networks.

LTE is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in the communications ecosystem, particularly in the area of emergency communications. To address this reality, this recently developed standard — when fully implemented — will allow LTE-enabled devices to receive CMAS alerts during emergencies or natural disasters. The specification will benefit end users by allowing wider proliferation of CMAS’ 90 character text message emergency alerts and warnings of imminent threats to life and property, Amber Alerts, and Presidential emergency messages. This standard also complements and coexists with other ATIS CMAS standards, such as those jointly developed between ATIS and TIA. ATIS has been the leader in CMAS standards development, and has assisted the industry’s compliance with the WARN Act and the FCC’s CMAS regulations. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) approved the Joint ATIS/TIA Commercial Mobile Alert System Federal Alert Gateway to CMSP Gateway Interface Specification as a DHS National Standard. The recently developed standard, The Commercial Mobile Alert System via Evolved Packet System Public Warning System, (ATIS-0700010), was developed by ATISWireless Technologies and Systems Committee (WTSC).
