The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), the nexgen of polar-orbiting operational environmental satellites, represents significant technological and scientific advancements for severe weather prediction and environmental monitoring and will help to advance weather, climate, environmental, and oceanographic science.
Recently selected for supply motion-control technology for the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) instrument to be flown on the JPSS-3 and JPSS-4 satellites by Northrop Grumman is Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions—the satellites are being developed by the National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) provides sounding observations needed to retrieve profiles of atmospheric temperature and moisture for civilian operational weather forecasting as well as continuity of these measurements for climate monitoring purposes. Cobham will perform this work with the $8 million contract under their belt.
