DISA... Jump To The New JCSS (Comms)

[SatNews] The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will release version 12 of the...

...Joint Communication Simulation System (JCSS) in mid-August. JCSS is the Joint Chiefs of Staff endorsed modeling and simulation tool for the warfighter. It provides communications planners and system analysts with the capability to validate support plans, analyze existing and proposed network architectures, and evaluate the performance of new devices and applications. The software is available for use by Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, contractors, and military personnel. Version 12 will include several new feature enhancements and models, and will be based on the OPNET Modeler 17.5 network modeling and simulation tool. Feature enhancements and models include:

  • Wide area Network (WAN) Accelerator - Riverbed Mobile Model (User Contributed Model):
    • Used to simulate workstations that are running the Riverbed Mobile Client software
    • Performs various WAN acceleration techniques including performance enhancing proxy (PEP), connection pooling, application caching, and streamlining
  • Tactical Radio - Combat Service Support Automated Information Systems Interface (User Contributed Model):
    • The Army Combat Service Support Automated Information Systems Interface (CAISI) provides a high speed, long range wireless network based on the 802.11 protocol
    • The model supports access point functionality, Ethernet switching, and long-range mesh connectivity between the access points to allow quick wireless connection between multiple tactical units
  • Tactical Smartphone (User Contributed Model):
    • Includes interfaces for WIFI, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) SATCOM
    • Supports Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128 bit encryption at layers 2 and 3
    • Allows for the inclusion of smartphone technology in JCSS simulations
  • Joint IP Modem (JIPM) Enhancements:
    • Support for Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation (ULE) and Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE) were added to the JIPM model. Additionally, the JIPM model supports the Multiprotocol Encapsulation (MPE)
    • Added support for Robust Header Compression (ROHC) and IP Header Compression (IPHC) protocol models
