EUMETSAT + Others Digging Into EU Space Policy @ Brussels Conference

[SatNews] The EUMETSAT Director-General, Alain Ratier, is attending the EU Space Policy Conference in Brussels January 27 through 28, 2015.

The conference is being held on the theme “EU Space Policy confronted with the rising demand for services and applications.” It is being organized in collaboration with the European Commission, the European Parliament and its Sky and Space Intergroup, the European Council, the European Space Agency, Eurospace, and key players from the space industry and space-user sectors.

Sessions cover the European space industry, international space cooperation and competition, EU space programs, satellite communications, challenges and opportunities facing Europe in space, and the defence and security dimension of space services and activities.

The EUMETSAT Director-General will address the session “The fight against climate change: the contribution of satellite technology, in particular Copernicus, in the run-up to COP21”, the 21st session of the Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change. In this session, he will have the opportunity to present to key European stakeholders, including members of the new Commission and European Parliament, EUMETSAT’s contribution to climate monitoring and the unique role that meteorological satellites can play, with the delivery of long-term, accurate, inter-calibrated and global observations. EUMETSAT’s plans to support the Copernicus climate change service will also be discussed.

The subject of the session is particularly pertinent following EUMETSAT’s organization of the Climate Symposium 2014 and the recent publication of its outcomes. 2015 will be a crucial year for climate matters, having been hailed as a year of “climate challenges”. EUMETSAT will be fully involved in global discussions and actions on climate leading up to the COP-21 meeting at the end of 2015.
