Liberty
Media COO Gary S. Howard to Retire
Englewood, CO/July 29, 2003/Satnews/ Gary
S. Howard,
Liberty Media Corporation Director, Executive
Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer, has announced plans to
retire effective February 1, 2004.
Mr. Howard stated,
"I have been very fortunate to have spent two-thirds of
my more than 30-year career working with the
extended Liberty Media family. I
am appreciative for the many outstanding
people I have had the pleasure of
working with over the years.
I am also grateful for the irreplaceable
business education I received while working
around John Malone for the past
20 years.
Now it is time to enjoy the fruits of my labor and move on to
another chapter in my life."
After graduating from
Colorado State University with a degree in
accounting, Mr. Howard began his career in
public accounting before joining
United Cable Television Corp. in 1984.
United Cable became United Artists
Entertainment Corp. where Mr. Howard was
Senior Vice President -- Acquisitions
and Chief Administrative Officer.
In 1991, United Artists merged with Tele-
Communications, Inc. (TCI) and Mr. Howard
became a Senior Vice President in
charge of Mergers and Acquisitions.
Mr. Howard's tenure at TCI and its
related companies included roles as CEO and
President of TCI Satellite
Entertainment, Inc. (currently known as
Liberty Satellite & Technology, Inc.
or LSAT), Chairman and CEO of United Video
Satellite Group (currently known as
Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc.) and,
most recently, as President and CEO
of TCI Ventures Group, TCI's technology
business unit. TCI Ventures Group
merged with Liberty Media in 1998 at which
time Mr. Howard assumed his role as
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating
Officer. Since July 1998, Mr.
Howard has served on Liberty Media's Board of
Directors and also serves on the
Boards of Directors of LSAT, UnitedGlobalCom,
Inc., On Command Corporation,
and Intelsat, Ltd.
