Intersputnik Accepted into Regional Telecommunications Body
MOSCOW, May 29, 2007 - Satnews Daily - The 37th regional meeting of the heads of the Regional Commonwealth for Cooperation in Communications (RCC) held recently in Latvia unanimously approved Intersputnik’s application to join the RCC as an observer.
RCC is a regional organization of telecommunication administrations that coordinates the efforts in telecommunications and postal service in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). RCC has a status of observer with United Nations organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Postal Union (WPU).
RCC includes 18 members of whom 12 are full members (Telecommunication Administrations of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Ukraine) and seven observers (Telecommunication Administrations of Latvia and Lithuania, Postal Operator of Estonia, and telecommunication operators of Germany, Denmark, and Estonia). Intersputnik is the seventh observer.
RCC’s main objectives are to foster mutually beneficial cooperation among RCC members and harmonize their networks and communications systems; coordinate science and technology policies, spectrum management and service tariffs; cooperate with international telecommunications and information technology organizations.
Considering that many Intersputnik member countries are RCC signatories, Intersputnik’s accession to the RCC will provide an ample opportunity for mutually beneficial cooperation between Intersputnik with more partners and higher-level coordination of both organizations’ policies in the field of international telecommunications.
Intersputnik, a Moscow-based intergovernmental organization of 25 member states, last April reviewed a wide range of issues related to Intersputnik’s current business and development prospects during its recent 35th board session held in Sofia, Bulgaria.
At this meeting, the Intersputnik board resolved that Intersputnik join the RCC in the field of telecommunications. The delegates to the session supported the directorate’s opinion that Intersputnik’s membership in the RCC would boost cooperation among signatories and members.
Intersputnik was founded in 1971 under the intergovernmental Agreement on the Establishment of an International System and Organization of Space Communications. Intersputnik is an international intergovernmental organization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening and development of economic, scientific, technical and cultural relations by communications as well as by radio and television broadcasting via satellites; cooperation and coordination of efforts of the member-countries in designing, establishing, operating and developing an international satellite communications system.
Intersputnik can be joined by the government of any state which shares the organization’s principles of activity. Presently, Intersputnik has 25 member-countries. Intersputnik allocates capacity on geostationary satellites to telecom operators, broadcasters and corporate clients and provides system integration services for international satellite networks via its subsidiary Intersputnik Holding.
Under a long-term partnership with Russian satellite operators RSCC and Gazcom, Intersputnik offers customers satellite resources on the Express-A-, Express-AM- and Yamal-series satellites.
