WASHINGTON DC, March 28, 2007 - Satnews Daily - Raytheon Company’s Intelligence and Information Systems unit has won a $14.5 million contract modification for a critical U.S. Air Force project aimed at enhancing data distribution worldwide.

This contract modification is for the Global Broadcast Services program, the Defense Department’s satellite-based system for distributing video, imagery and other large data files to users around the world. Raytheon will build 59 Army receive suites and 69 Air Force Internet protocol receiver suites that will provide theater commanders the ability to broadcast theater-specific command and control information in a timely manner. The work is to be completed this September 2007.

Raytheon is also competing against Lockheed Martin Corp. for a $160 million U.S. Air Force contract to make systems to operate satellites. The system will give the USAF the ability to communicate with satellites in orbit. The satellites, part of Global Positioning Systems II and III, are intended to improve navigation by air, land and sea, and be more difficult for enemies of the U.S. military to disable.

GPS enables properly equipped users to determine precise time and velocity and worldwide latitude, longitude and altitude to within a few meters.
