OTTAWA, Canada, March 19, 2007/Satnews Daily/ ― Canadian firm Telecommunication Satellite Company (Telesat) will provide consultancy and vital supervisory services related to the launch of Vietnam’s first satellite, VinaSat-1. Representatives from Vietnam’s state-owned Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) and Telesat signed the contract in Ottawa.
VinaSat-1 will operate C- and Ku-band transponders that cover Japan, Eastern China, North Korea, India, some Southeast Asian countries, Australia and adjacent areas. The satellite must be launched before the second quarter of 2008 or lose an orbital position booked years ago. It will be launched into orbit by an Ariane 5 from Arianespace’s Kourou Launch Center in French Guiana and will be operational for 15-20 years.
Hanoi views VinaSat-1 as an important symbol of its sovereignty and technological ability. It will be Vietnam's first satellite and second space project after it sent an astronaut on a Soviet space mission in 1985.
VNPT began building a satellite control station in the northern Ha Tay province in January, and will build another control station in Binh Duong province. Under the contract, Telesat experts will provide technical consultancy and supervision of the satellite's manufacture and installation process implemented by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, which will build the satellite. Lockheed Martin won a contract in May 2006 for a package including the satellite, its launch and some ground equipment.
