Telesat Canada Selects IDC for intelligent Satellite Network

WASHINGTON DC, Feb. 23, 2007/Satnews Daily/ ― International Datacasting Corporation (TSX: IDC) will provide a next generation DVB-S2 broadband satellite communications system to Telesat Canada, a satellite operator for broadcast distribution and telecommunications services.

IDC and US-based Efficient Channel Coding (ECC), a subsidiary of Viasat (Nasdaq: VSAT), will supply a DVB-S2 based hub, terminals, installation, support services and development of software to implement a next generation intelligent network. This satellite system will be used by Telesat under a Precarn, Inc. funded research project to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create a next generation intelligent satellite network.

Precarn is an independent, not-for-profit company that supports the pre-commercial development of leading-edge technologies. Precarn works with Canadian companies who are seeking to commercialize their new ideas to get an edge in global markets. It receives support from Industry Canada, other federal departments and provincial government agencies, as well as private sources.

DVB-S2 provides greater bandwidth efficiency and improved network capacity that reduces operating costs. DVB-S2 incorporates state-of-the-art modulation (QPSK, 8PSK, and 16-APSK), advanced forward error correction coding and use of modern data compression techniques to implement a cost-effective IP based solution.

The system provides the highest bandwidth efficiency on the forward and return links. The system offers service providers key benefits such as VoIP header compression, multimedia support with integrated data, voice and video applications and which operate over C, Ku or Ka bands.

Paul Bush, Telesat's vice president of Broadcasting & Corporate Development, said significant improvements can be made to future VSAT systems with the addition of artificial intelligence to the network. "These capabilities offer the promise of enhanced performance and economic gains which will allow Telesat to offer new and more cost effective services to our customers."

IDC president and CEO Ron Clifton said they are pleased to be able to work with Telesat and ECC "on this exciting project. The use of AI for this application is innovative, takes advantage of DVB-S2 and offers a lot of potential because of its ability to deal with complex network issues."

IDC provides products, systems and services for the implementation of broadband wireless infrastructure networks used to distribute broadband multimedia data. IDC delivers IP-based datacasting solutions via satellite and content distribution technologies with installations in more than 100 countries worldwide.
