Boeing Hands Over Measat-3 Satellite

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 21, 2007/Satnews Daily/ ― The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) announced the successful on-orbit handover of Malaysian Measat-3 satellite to Measat Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd.

The successful transfer of the Boeing 601 satellite to Measat follows on-orbit testing to ensure the spacecraft systems are functioning as designed. Launched on Dec.11, 2006 by an International Launch Services Proton/Breeze M rocket from Kazakhstan, Measat-3 will enable Measat to deliver direct-to-home (DTH) television and other telecommunication services across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Eastern Africa and Eastern Europe.

"Measat-3 has completed all on-orbit testing, and we were pleased to hand over this satellite to an important customer," said Stephen T. O'Neill, president of Boeing Satellite Systems International. "The handover validates our focus on program execution, attention to detail and listening to our customer every step of the way."

Measat-3 is Boeing's 70th 601 model satellite built at its satellite manufacturing facility in El Segundo, Calif. Boeing also manufactures the larger 702 model, the world's most powerful communications satellite, two lines of satellites designed to support mobile communications, and a series of global positioning satellites and military communications satellites.

Measat-3 joins the existing Boeing-built Measat-1 and Measat-2 spacecraft in the Malaysia-East Asia Satellite (Measat) system. Measat-3 is located at 91.5 degrees East longitude and will provide expansion capacity for Measat to meet the increasing market demand for satellite services within the region.

Launched in December 2006, Measat-3 employs 24 C-band and 24 Ku-band transponders, each providing 36 MHz of bandwidth over a 15-year minimum service life. Measat-3's C-band payload will cover Africa, Middle East, Asia and Australia. The Ku-band payload has been designed to provide high-powered flexible service options for the development of data services and DTH applications in Malaysia, Indonesia, India and China.

The Boeing 601 was introduced in 1987 to meet requirements for high-power, multiple-payload satellites for such applications as direct television broadcasting to small receiving antennas, very small aperture terminals for private business networks, and mobile communications.

Measat Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. is the only licensed commercial satellite operator in Malaysia. Measat pioneered the development of high-powered Ku-band Direct-to-Home services into South East Asia with the launch of Measat-1 and Measat-2 in 1996, providing C-band and Ku-band connectivity spanning India, Asia, Australia and the U.S. via Hawaii.
