CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 19, 2007/Satnews Daily/ ― ViaSat, Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has shipped over 9,000 terminals of its LinkStar DVB-S2 satellite communication system since its introduction one year ago.
Used in 35 networks worldwide, LinkStar applications include shared hub services, equity trading, banking, education, oil and gas operations, Voice over IP (VoIP), military communications, GSM backhaul, and digital movie distribution. Network installations are to be found in Russia, China, Africa, South America, North America, the South Pacific, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand .
The hub-based LinkStarS2 system, an IP-based VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), incorporates the new DVB-S2 waveform that offers up to 30 percent greater bandwidth efficiency, substantially reducing network operating costs and increasing network capacity. The ViaSat DVB-S2 product line also includes the LinkWayS2 mesh networking system. Both VSATs can connect to any S2-capable LinkStar hub, enabling powerful and flexible hybrid star/mesh network architectures as well.
Chris Leber, VP and general manager of ViaSat VSAT Networks, said several DVB-S customers had upgraded to DVB-S2. He noted that the company was attracting new operators who can reach more customers with their services because of the improved economics of the LinkStarS2 system.
ViaSat produces satellite and other communication products and is a key supplier of network-centric military communications and encryption technologies to the U.S. government. The company has three wholly owned subsidiaries: US Monolithics, Efficient Channel Coding and Enerdyne Technologies Inc.
