Spacenet Celebrates 25th Anniversary; Reaches Milestone of 100,000 Customers Served

MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 1, 2006/Satnews Daily/ — Spacenet Inc. has announced that the company celebrated its 25th anniversary providing satellite and communication services to enterprise, government, small office and residential customers. In addition, Spacenet said it has achieved another important milestone by reaching 100,000 network endpoints with its satellite and hybrid terrestrial network services mostly for enterprise and government customers.

Spacenet was founded in October 1981 as a satellite services provider as an offshoot of the Southern Pacific Railroad company. The company became GTE Spacenet Corporation in 1983, and was later acquired by GE Americom, a subsidiary of General Electric, in 1994. In 1998, Spacenet became a wholly owned subsidiary of Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., a leading provider of technology and services for satellite-based communications networks, and it has remained a substantial component of Gilat’s business since that time.

Spacenet has a history of industry innovation, including the introduction of hybrid DSL/VSAT enterprise networks in 2004, and the launch of its Connexstar shared-hub services for business and government users in 2002. In 2000, Spacenet launched StarBand, the first two-way satellite broadband Internet access service for residential customers in the United States.

Spacenet Inc. has now passed the mark of more than 100,000 locations served by its satellite and hybrid network solutions. Spacenet offers a comprehensive portfolio of solutions to a wide range of industries including retail, energy, financial services, hospitality and government customers.

Spacenet also offers advanced service features such as options for on-demand solutions for backup and disaster recovery; worldwide coverage through a network of partners; private networks, “virtual private hubs” and shared-hub VSAT services; and services in North America for the groundbreaking Cisco IP VSAT Module.

Spacenet CEO Andreas Georghiou said, for the past 25 years, Spacenet has been a leader in developing custom networking and communications solutions for customers of all sizes, ranging from some of the world’s largest commercial WANs to individual users in remote locations.

“Whether it has been providing advanced VSAT or hybrid network services, innovative application solutions, or sophisticated network management support, Spacenet has always been driven by a focus on delivering network solutions that meet the needs and exceed the expectations of our customers,” he said.
