MSV Wins 2 New U.S. Patents

RESTON, Va., Oct. 24, 2006/Satnews Daily/ ― The United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Mobile Satellite Ventures two new patents. This bring to fifteen the number of patents directed to Ancillary Terrestrial Component technology, the linchpin of MSV's next generation integrated satellite-terrestrial wireless broadband network.

MSV said it already has over eighty issued U.S. patents, along with counterpart cases issued worldwide.

MSV said its U.S. Patent No. 7,113,778 (Aggregate Radiated Power Control for Multi-Band/Multi-Mode Satellite Radiotelephone Communications Systems and Methods) allows an ancillary terrestrial network to deploy more than one air interface concurrently. In addition, the '778 Patent minimizes uplink interference by using space-diversity and polarization-diversity combining techniques.

“The use of a diversity receiver in an ATC network is attractive to anyone seeking to optimize system capacity and performance,” explained Dr. Peter D. Karabinis, senior vice president & chief technical officer of MSV and inventor of the '778 Patent. “The ratification of this patent by the Patent Office reinforces MSV's position as a technological pioneer in the field of ATC communications.”

The second patent issued to MSV, U.S. Patent No. 7,113,743 (Systems and Methods for Inter-System Sharing of Satellite Communications Frequencies Within a Common Footprint), is directed to systems and methods for sharing satellite frequencies between two or more dissimilar satellites serving geographically overlapping areas, without creating undue interference.

Dr. Karabinis, the inventor of the '743 Patent, said the satellite frequencies can be reused between two satellites even within the same geographic area, without adversely affecting the performance of either system provided there is significant gain differential between the two satellites.

"Satellite frequencies are at a premium. This patented system and method permits MSV to achieve higher capacities,” added Dr. Karabinis.
