Thailand’s Shin Satellite Deorbits Thaicom 3 Satellite

NONTHABURI, Thailand, Oct. 3, 2006/Satnews Daily/ — Shin Satellite Public Company Limited (SATTEL) deorbited its Thaicom 3 Satellite on Tuesday at approximately 01.37 a.m. (Bangkok Time).

In a statement, Shin Satellite said the decision to deorbit was reached after the spacecraft experienced power loss to such an extent that it could not provide further service.

The company said the deorbit of Thaicom 3 had no adverse effect on the customers as there are no longer customers on the satellite. After the launch of Thaicom 5 this year, the company transferred all Thaicom 3’s customers to Thaicom 5 Satellite; and relocated the Thaicom 3 to 50.5 degrees East to serve its new mission in the Middle East area and South Asia.

The Thaicom 3 satellite is a Spacebus 3000A model built by Alcatel Alenia Space of France and was launched on April 16, 1997. The satellite was expected to have a mission life of 14 years.

Thaicom 3 is equipped with twenty-five C-band transponders, seven of which transmit in a semi global beam. It also has fourteen Ku-band transponders.
