HAMPSHIRE, UK, June 30, 2006/Satnews Daily/ ― Vega Group PLC announced on Thursday that it has won a five-year contract extension from Serco to provide spacecraft technical support to the Skynet military satellite communications program worth $3.48 million (£1.9m).
Vega said its six-strong team of consultants at Oakhanger and Hawthorn will continue to provide technical support for the current Skynet 4 satellites, as well as the Skynet 5 satellites when they are launched, the first of which is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2006.
Serco has been sub-contracted by Paradigm Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Paradigm Secure Communications. Paradigm secured the PFI mandate with the UK Ministry of Defence to execute all of Skynet’s practical satellite operations and relies on VEGA’s technical expertise and experience to ensure that the current Skynet 4 and new Skynet 5 satellites remain in operation. This involves analyzing the satellites’ data and planning and preparing maneuvers.
Vega has supported the Skynet programs since 1988. Currently, six satellites provide UK and NATO armed forces with strategic and tactical communications across the world.
Serco’s Skynet 5 network director, Richard Vella, said he is very pleased that their excellent relationship with Vega has resulted in a contract extension for a further five years.
“The consistency of their support in continuing the essential 'heartbeat' of Orbit Determination and Operational Scheduling throughout a protracted and difficult migration to our new site in Corsham has been unfaltering; the innovation and persistence they provide in contributing new ideas to processes and procedures, whilst bedding-in new ways of working, has been invaluable,” he said.
