Digital Media Distribution via Satellite Market to Reach $672.8-M by 2010, Says Northern Sky

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 8, 2006/Satnews Daily/ — The market for digital signage, interactive distance learning, and digital cinema is estimated to generate $287.9 million in revenues in 2006 and is expected to reach $672.8 million by 2010.

According to a market survey report of Northern Sky Research (NSR), digital media via satellite application market will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.5% driven by both strong legacy system equipment upgrades and new IP-based enabled digital media services.

It added an increasing volume of opportunities in digital signage, IDL, and corporate communications is also developing due to a strong trend in richer and more diversified content for the enterprise.

The corporate business satellite network is evolving towards a full use suite that not only serves to train and communicate with staff but also to enrich the customer shopping experience. The retail segment will be a vital source of near-term revenues and will offer a strong and potentially large end user market for digital signage and IDL vendors and service providers, the report said. Digital signage will realize its potential over the forecast period with double-digit growth expected and through large deployments planned in retail, automotive and financial services, it concluded.

“In addition to the great potential for new satellite digital media networks, a significant portion of the market resides in upgrading legacy systems to adopt IP for the delivery of new digital content,” states Christopher Baugh, president of NSR.

“Digital signage, which is gaining ground as an alternative advertisement media, provides vendors and equipment manufacturers with the potential to develop a suite of new solutions that take advantage of IP over satellite,” said Baugh.

Recent demonstrations, pilot projects and roll-out plans in the retailer space, such as Tesco, Wal-Mart, Advance Auto Parts, Daimler Chrysler and Home Depot, have shown solid ROI for satellite-based digital signage solutions. This success should only serve to foster confidence in satellite delivery of digital signage over the next five years.
