Radyne Corp. and General Dynamics Introduce 'Over-the-Horizon' Modem

PHOENIX, June 23, 2005/Satnews Daily/ — Radyne Corp. (NASDAQ:RADN) and General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), announced on Wednesday the availability of a new troposcatter or "over-the-horizon" modem.

The new product, called the TM-20 modem, has the ability to transmit radio waves over the curvature of the Earth by bouncing signals off irregularities (small changes in humidity, temperature and pressure) in the troposphere approximately 10 Km above the Earth's surface.

Radyne said the TM-20 is being developed by Radyne in partnership with General Dynamics C4 Systems and will be marketed exclusively under the General Dynamics VertexRSI(R) brand name. The TM-20 represents a quantum leap in troposcatter communications technology; facilitating data transfer at speeds up to 20 Mbps, a nearly three-fold improvement over any other over-the-horizon system available today, Radyne said. The modem also provides increased support for a variety of communications techniques to maximize transmission range and data integrity.

The U.S. military currently employs AN/TRC-170 troposcatter systems using 1980's technology for tactical and strategic communications throughout the world, with a number of terminals currently deployed in the Middle East.

Bob Fitting, Radyne’s CEO said TM-20 represents the first significant advance in over-the-horizon technology in almost three decades. “The use of modern signal processing techniques and a patented channel-directed-equalizer provides for link performance and configuration flexibility previously unheard of in Troposcatter systems. Today the concentration of technology in the TM-20's single, two-unit chassis (four inches high, by 19 inches wide and 18 inches deep) provides functionality and performance well beyond what was achievable using entire racks of equipment only a few years ago,” he explained.
