Globalstar Files FCC Application to Open New Florida Gateway

MILPITAS, Calif., April 22, 2005/Satnews Daily/ Globalstar LLC announced on Thursday it has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for authority to operate a Globalstar Gateway in Sebring, Florida.

The Gateway, expected to open later this summer, will allow Globalstar to improve service at the fringes of its North American service area, particularly at sea.

Four Globalstar Gateways currently cover the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean -- one in Texas, one in Puerto Rico, one in Eastern Canada and one in Western Canada. Each Gateway provides communications channels within a radius of about 1,500 miles from the Gateway. Because demand in southeast U.S and northern Caribbean continues to grow beyond best-case projections, the addition of a fifth Gateway in central Florida will ensure that subscribers can continue to expect the coverage, reliability and voice quality.

“The Sebring Gateway will provide improved coverage to some of Globalstar's most avid customers,” said Jay Monroe, chairman and CEO of Globalstar.

The Florida Gateway is being installed to increase capacity and improve service levels at the fringes of the North American service area, where both the number of customers and the number of minutes used has increased beyond expectations over the past several years.

Monroe noted that in the past 12 months, Globalstar has made significant enhancements to its service infrastructure, including upgrading its network to extend data monitoring services to additional regions in Europe and the Middle East, and introducing a variety of products and services including an affordable and easy to implement remote asset tracking application.
